Comedian Ben Elton has always been political, always outspoken and was nicknamed ‘motormouth’ for good reason. Ben Elton’s takedown of Rishi Sunak on TV yesterday, saw him roll back the years.
In under two minutes, during Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, he slammed the PM in brutal fashion.
Ben has lost a bit of his bite in recent years, and was allegedly selling out by working with Andrew Lloyd Webber. Hardly a socialist companion for the ages.
His revival began when the BBC asked him to think about writing something to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, and he came up with a sitcom based on the Bard’s family and professional life.
Thatcher
‘Upstart Crow was a beautiful part of my life. I loved working on a sitcom with David Mitchell. It was a success critically and in popularity. Then I toured as a comedian again for the first time in 15 years and got great reviews.’
He even told the Daily Mail he has a certain respect for Margaret Thatcher saying: ‘The degradation of principle in politics is so depressing. I’ve got a lot of respect for a lot of Tories, but I did not have any respect for Boris Johnson. I believe principle is important. I respect Thatcher. I disagree with pretty much everything she said, but she was a woman of deep personal principle, she pursued it to the point of being unpopular, she never courted popularity in that way.’
