The mother of murdered Stephen Lawrence, Doreen Lawrence, has spoken out as the police have just named a 6th suspect in the infamous murder.
So how did Met fail to spot him until now?
The person in question is Matthew White, who died in 2021, aged 50.
The BBC found the Met Police seriously mishandled key inquiries related to him.
Doreen Lawrence 6th suspect named
White first came to the attention of the investigation team in May 1993 when he told officers he had visited the home address of two other suspects on the night of the murder.
He was again seen by officers when he refused to attend the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry.
The Met Police tweeted: “Although two men were convicted of Stephen’s murder in 2012, we know other suspects have not yet been brought to justice. DAC Matt Ward said: “On the 30th anniversary of Stephen’s murder, Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley apologised for our failings and I repeat that apology today.”
In response, the Met has taken the almost unprecedented step of naming White as a suspect.
“Unfortunately, too many mistakes were made in the initial investigation,” says Scotland Yard.
Sanctions
“The impact of them continues to be seen,” reads the statement from Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Ward.
Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Stephen’s mother, said there should be “serious sanctions” against the police officers who failed to investigate White.
“Only when police officers lose their jobs can the public have confidence that failure and incompetence will not be tolerated and that change will happen,” Doreen said.

Lord Chris Rennard wrote: “I agree with @DLawrenceOBE We cannot have confidence in a Police force which retains officers culpable for racist murderers evading justice. Well done @BBCNews for investigating what the @metpoliceuk did wrong. Action must be taken now to pursue justice for Stephen Lawrence.”
These tweets are not called for, even by Lee’s family…
