A faction of Tory MPs have gone and created the ‘New Conservatives’ pressure group within the party.
It seems to have the support of deputy chairman of the party 30p Lee Anderson, which i’m sure Rishi Sunak is over the moon about.
However, he didn’t appear at luanch and stand-in Danny Kruger insisted “he’s unwell in bed” but also “doesn’t officially endorse policy proposals” due to his party role, reports Politico.
Who are they?
This new pressure group is made up of predominantly “red wall”-based 2019- and 2017-intake Tory MP.
The group held a formal launch on yesterday for its 12-point plan to cut immigration.
These policies would have a huge impact on the UK economy as well as immigration.
So who is in this gang?
As far as we are aware these are the splinter group members…
Gareth Bacon
Duncan Baker
Jack Brereton
Paul Bristow
Miriam Cates
Brendan Clarke-Smith
James Daly
Anna Firth
Nick Fletcher
Chris Green
James Grundy
Jonathan Gullis
Eddie Hughes
Tom Hunt
Mark Jenkinson
Danny Kruger
Andrew Lewer
Marco Longhi
Robin Millar
Lia Nici
What do they stand for?
Tom Hunt stressed they were not “rebels”, reports The National.
The group have slammed Tory leadership for failing to deliver on its manifesto pledge to bring down the level of net migration to 226,000 arrivals in 2024.
Last year, net migration hit 606,000.
New Conservatives
However, the most controversial call is to scrap Health and Care Visas.
These were launched to fill gaps in the health and social care sector with overseas workers, as the sector is desperate for staff.
One member Miriam Cates said her message to Rishi Sunak was: “The choice is this: cut immigration, keep our promise to voters, and restore democratic, cultural and economic security, or kick the can down the road, lose the next election, and resign ourselves to a low growth, low-wage, labor-intensive service economy with a population forecast to rise by another 20 million in the next 25 years.”
