The Queen’s Gambit was a major success for Netflix in 2020, attracting numerous new chess enthusiasts and further elevating Anya Taylor-Joy‘s already impressive reputation.
Although the series seemed to conclude conclusively, fans were thrilled when a tweet from Anya Taylor-Joy’s Twitter account teased the possibility of a second season. However, the tweet was quickly taken down, and Taylor-Joy claimed her account was hacked, dispelling the rumors. Despite this, speculation about a new season remains high.
The Queen’s Gambit centers around the story of chess prodigy Beth Harmon, portrayed by Taylor-Joy, as she competes in a male-dominated international chess tournament and achieves remarkable success. The limited series became one of Netflix’s most-watched originals, receiving 11 Emmy awards, including Outstanding Limited Series. Due to its success, fans hoped for a continuation.
Yet, the show’s executive producers, Scott Frank and William Holberg, confirmed that there are no plans for a continuation. They believe the story has been fully told, fearing that further attempts at continuation might diminish its impact. Nevertheless, Frank, Holberg, and Taylor-Joy are committed to collaborating on a new project and are eager to bring another compelling story to life.
Despite the lack of an official announcement, fans continue to hope for more of Beth Harmon’s story, partly fueled by Taylor-Joy’s recent tweet, which turned out to be a hack. The possibility of a second season remains uncertain, but the success of the limited series and the cast and producers’ enthusiasm for future projects keep the anticipation alive.
As of now, Netflix has not confirmed a second season for The Queen’s Gambit or provided any release date. In an interview in 2021, Taylor-Joy expressed surprise at the demand for a follow-up season and stated that while no discussions have taken place, she believes that “never say ‘never'” applies to Hollywood. She also shared her thoughts on exploring Beth’s character as a mother, now that she is sober and more aware of the challenges she faces.
