A new Pirates of the Caribbean film might turn some heads. It comes as the Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin could be steering the ship into uncharted territory.
The initial trilogy, featuring the big names of Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, became one of the highest-grossing franchises in history, a lot of bounty of the filmmakers!
The series is known for its swashbuckling adventures, supernatural elements, and humorous characters.
Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow became iconic, earning him critical acclaim and a large fan following. The character is known for his quirky personality, drunken antics, and unpredictable behaviour.
The films combine elements of adventure, fantasy, and comedy. They often involve treasure hunts, supernatural curses, and epic battles on the high seas.

However, the 2017, Dead Men Tell No Tales didn’t do as well, leaving many to think the film series was due to walk the plank.
Speaking to the LA Times, Mazin said “We pitched [a sixth film] and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
Mazin says the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have put a halt on any development.
Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer expressed uncertainty over Johnny Depp returning to the “Pirates” franchise when asked about it by The Sunday Times in May 2022. “[Will Johnny Depp be back?] Not at this point,” he said to the paper. “The future is yet to be decided.”
