The story follows Arisu, a disaffected young man who is living a mundane life in Tokyo. Along with his friends, Karube and Chota, they find themselves trapped in an alternate Tokyo, devoid of people, where they must compete in deadly games to survive. These games are a blend of survival, strategy, and puzzle-solving.
Each game is connected to a playing card suit (hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades), and the group must complete a series of challenges to earn “visas” that allow them to stay in this strange world. Failure to win visas or breaking the rules can result in dire consequences, including death.
As Arisu and his friends navigate this perilous realm, they also uncover clues about the mysterious nature of Borderland and the reasons behind their predicament. The series explores themes of survival, friendship, trust, and personal growth as the characters strive to find a way back to their reality.
