Ghostbusters is back! Who you gonna call?
In the ongoing saga of Egon Spengler’s descendants—his daughter Callie (Carrie Coon) and two grandchildren, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trever (Finn Wolfhard)—New York City is in the grip of an unprecedented heatwave that takes a sinister turn when an ancient artifact unleashes an malevolent force.
The Spenglers must join forces with the original Ghostbusters, including Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stanz (Dan Aykroyd), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), to thaw out the Big Apple from its “death chill.”
Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2: All we know – so who you gonna click on?!
Joining the ensemble are Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani, with the return of Paul Rudd as Gary Grooberson. Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, and the original Ghostbusters’ Annie Potts also feature in the cast.
Taking over the directorial duties from Jason Reitman, the executive producer and co-writer of Afterlife, is Gil Kenan. Reitman, who co-wrote the script with Kenan, also serves as a producer alongside Jason Blumenfield.
Scheduled for release on March 29, 2024, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire aims to dominate the lucrative Easter box office weekend.
Following the lukewarm reception of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot with Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, Sony decided to return the series to its roots with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, paying homage to the late Harold Ramis and Aykroyd, the creators of the franchise. The studio showcased the film at the first post-Covid CinemaCon in August 2021, impressing exhibitors. Ghostbusters: Afterlife hit the November box office that year, grossing $129.3 million domestically and over $204 million worldwide.
Since its inception in the summer of 1984, the franchise has amassed a total gross of $945.2 million across four movies.
