The news of Michael B. Jordan emerging as Disney’s top choice for the role of Hercules in the live-action remake has sparked online discussion, with critics labeling it as another instance of woke “race swapping.”
The original 1997 animated film drew inspiration from the legendary Greek hero Heracles, later adapted by the Romans into the more familiar “Hercules.” As the greatest of the Greek heroes, Hercules became an iconic figure for Roman emperors, shaping their self-image in his likeness.
Set in ancient Greece, the 1997 film portrayed Hercules as the son of Zeus and Hera. Wrestling with his divine strength and curious about his origins, Hercules discovers his dual nature—half-man and half-god. To reclaim his godhood, he embarks on a journey to defeat various evil creatures and prove himself as a hero.
In the original, James Woods voiced the titular character, supported by an acclaimed cast including Danny DeVito as Phil and Rip Torn as Zeus. Given the original’s popularity, anticipation for a live-action remake has been high.
In 2021, leaks suggested that Disney was considering a non-white actor for the lead role. While not explicitly excluding white males, industry insider Daniel Richtman speculated that Disney was actively seeking a person of color for the remake.
Recent rumors point to Michael B. Jordan being in discussions for the role. While the casting remains unconfirmed, reactions on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), reflect criticism of the perceived direction the film is taking.
Political commentator Yohan Pawer Médias expressed his sentiments, stating, “Michael B. Jordan is tapped to star in the new Disney film… Hercules. I hesitate between laughing and crying! When will there be a biopic on Rosa Parks played by Muriel Robin? Fuck Wokeism.”
Sharing his thoughts, another user who goes by the handle @MerhRosales commented: “Bad decisions after bad decision.”
Critics of the potential casting decision voiced concerns, denouncing it as inaccurate and politically motivated.
While Rocketman star Taron Egerton is also reportedly in consideration for the role, InsideTheMagic.com notes that Michael B. Jordan has consistently remained the frontrunner in recent years due to his established “action star status.”
This isn’t the first time Disney has faced criticism for “race-swapping” characters in the remakes of its classic animated films. In 2019, the company ignited a widespread debate by casting Black American actress and singer Halle Bailey as Ariel in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
More recently, Rachel Zegler, the part-Latina lead in Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White remake, encountered backlash across various online platforms. Interviews circulating on the internet showed her repeatedly mocking the classic story and its characters.
