For once it wasn’t Ricky Gervais who was making the headlines this year at the Golden Globes.
He wasn’t on hosting duties so it was left to Jerrod Carmichael to take the mic and make the audience gasp.
Carmichael did what few people would dare do and made a Scientology joke referencing Tom Cruise.
The presenter said: “Backstage, I found these three Golden Globe awards that Tom Cruise returned. Just a pitch, but I think maybe we take these three things and exchange them for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige.”
Missing
Miscavige was a prominent Scientologist who was married to Scientologist leader David Miscavige but she disappeared in 2007 and her whereabouts isn’t known.
Superstar Tom Cruise has been a prominent member of the church for over 30 years.
It is very rare for anyone to speak out against the church after they have left.
There was visible shock on the faces of the audience following the comment.

One person who praised his comments was former member Leah Remini who has been concerned about the Shelly’s disappearance over the last 15 years.
