Tesla is recalling just over 2m vehicles in the United States fitted with its Autopilot advanced driver-assistance system to install new safeguards.
It comes as a safety regulator has reported that the system was open to “misuse”, reports The Guardian.
Tesla Cars Recalled
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been investigating the car maker for more than two years over whether Tesla vehicles adequately ensure that drivers pay attention when using the driver assistance system.
Tesla said in the recall filing that Autopilot’s software system controls “may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse” and could increase the risk of a crash.
The acting NHTSA administrator, Ann Carlson, told Reuters in August it was “really important that driver monitoring systems take into account that humans over-trust technology”.
Musk Comment
Only a few days ago he replied to a trailer for the film Leave The World Behind, as the film showed Teslas piled up.
He wrote: “Teslas can charge from solar panels even if the world goes fully Mad Max and there is no more gasoline!”
In Leave the World Behind, these Teslas drive just fine – but they have been hacked to chase folk around.
I guess that’s a separate worry we will get to that another time!
“This guy didn’t watch the movie,” one viewer claimed.
Another person said: “Elon should rewatch the movie.”
So he might be right about the cars in the future, but he needs to focus on the cars TODAY!
