Bibby Stockholm costing more per migrant than hotels admitted the Home Office, reports The Telegraph. It comes as the Bibby Stockholm Suicide is still sending shockwaves through the nation.
Bibby Stockholm Suicide
An asylum seeker thought to have taken his own life was heard “screaming, shouting and punching walls” before being found dead, it has been claimed, reports The Independent.
Costs
The cost of the barge was set out in a letter sent by Matthew Rycroft, the Home Office’s permanent secretary, to the home affairs select committee’s chair, Diana Johnson.
The Government is paying £41,000 per day for the barge, which is currently only at 60 per cent capacity.
More than £22 million has been spent on accommodation for asylum seekers on the Bibby Stockholm barge so far, the Home Office’s top official revealed on Wednesday.
The controversial barge has a capacity of around 500 residents, and if it is used for an initial 18 months, the cost works out as £91 a day for each resident. More expensive than many hotels.
