Many of us woke up with a post-New Year’s Eve hangover, but it likely pales in comparison to what Rob McElhenney‘s fans experienced when they stumbled upon his New Year’s Eve photo dump.
Rob McElhenney, the actor who co-owns Wrexham FC alongside Ryan Reynolds, raised eyebrows and sparked serious concern among his followers when he shared a photo on December 31st, depicting his head in a grotesquely swollen state.
In the selfie, McElhenney’s face appeared unnaturally ballooned, with one of his eyes nearly shut due to the swelling. However, he nonchalantly referred to this alarming transformation as a ‘slight allergic reaction.’
Even McElhenney’s celebrity friend and fellow comedian Mindy Kaling admitted that she was nearly startled into dropping her phone upon seeing the shocking image, while her young son reacted with a scream.
For many of us who came across the post while scrolling through Instagram, it was a similar experience—a shocking surprise amid the usual 2023 year-end roundup posts.
The 46-year-old actor treated his fans to a carousel of images showcasing the highlights of his previous year. These included photos with his wife and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” co-star, Kaitlin Olson, a selfie with Prince Harry, and a snapshot of him and Reynolds chatting with King Charles and Camilla on a pitch. It was a photo dump that was hard to top.
As we all know, the past year brought its fair share of ups and downs, and it seemed like life had taken quite a toll on McElhenney.
He captioned his post with a humorous twist: “Aside from that slight allergic reaction to the nuts, 2023 was one of the best years of my life. Thank you to the people and places that made it possible. My life is full of love and joy because of you. So excited for 2024. I’ll stay away from the nuts.”
Social media users were understandably shocked by his dramatic appearance and found it hard to believe that he had actually experienced such a severe reaction.
However, here’s the relief: McElhenney’s head did not truly double in size and become misshapen in real life. It was actually his iconic character, Mac, who suffered the dramatic allergic reaction. It was all part of an episode in season 16 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” where Mac grappled with a severe peanut allergy but couldn’t resist indulging in a tub of ‘Extra Fancy Nuts.’
Despite his lips becoming grotesquely swollen and his breathing compromised, he stubbornly continued to munch on his snack and attributed his reaction to blowing up inflatable furniture.
By the end of the episode, his entire face had ballooned, but his priority remained unchanged—he wanted to head to Costco, not the hospital, to get more nuts.
So, no need to panic, it was all just a prank, and McElhenney didn’t really kick off 2024 resembling Sloth from “The Goonies.”
