In a recent session of Prime Minister’s Questions, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer accused Conservative MPs of laughing at the plight of an Iceland employee grappling with mortgage difficulties.
Sir Keir began the session on January 31 by sharing his encounter with Phil, an employee at Iceland in Warrington. However, his remarks were met with interruptions and heckling from Tory members in the Commons.
Expressing his dismay at the response, Sir Keir stated, “Laughing at an employee at Iceland who’s struggling with his mortgage, shame.” He went on to reveal Phil’s situation, emphasizing that the employee’s mortgage is set to increase by a substantial £1,000 per month.
In response to the accusation, Chancellor Rishi Sunak defended the government’s actions, stating, “Thanks to this Government, Phil and millions of other workers, not just at Iceland but across the country, are benefiting this month in their pay packet for a tax cut worth £100s for someone on an average salary.”
