In a recent appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Oscar nominee Sterling K. Brown shared his humility about the prospect of winning an Oscar this year and predicted that Robert Downey Jr is the frontrunner for the award. Brown, recognized for his role in “American Fiction,” received his first-ever Academy Awards nomination last month for Best Supporting Actor.
During the interview with Graham Norton, Brown expressed admiration for Downey Jr, stating, “Downey Jr’s gonna win, and he’s incredibly deserving, he’s an incredible actor. Like, you should give him love. The fact that I get a chance to be nominated along with Mr. De Niro and Ryan Gosling and [Mark] Ruffalo, I’m just happy to be in the room.”
Brown, known for his role in the acclaimed series “This Is Us,” which spanned six seasons from 2016 to 2022 and earned him five Emmy nominations and one Golden Globe nod, presented a gracious and humble attitude during the interview. He jokingly suggested that Colman Domingo, nominated for Best Actor for his role in “Rustin,” might “probably win” over him in his category, even if Downey Jr. secures victory.
Reflecting on his first Oscar nomination, Brown shared the exciting moment on Instagram, recalling how he woke up to the surprising news. Getting ready to take his kids to school, he discovered numerous messages on his phone and realized, “I got nominated for an Oscar. It’s crazy.”
Acknowledging the significance of receiving an invitation to the Oscars for the first time in his career, Brown emphasized the honor of being part of such a prestigious event that he had watched throughout his life.
While facing strong competition, particularly from Downey Jr’s notable post-Marvel role, the anticipation for this year’s Oscars is heightened. The ceremony, scheduled for March 10 and set to air on ABC, also holds the potential for historic moments, with Lily Gladstone of “Killers of the Flower Moon” possibly becoming the first Native American to win a competitive acting Oscar, and Martin Scorsese’s nod making him the most-nominated living director in the category.
