In a recent development, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has engaged in a £1,000 bet with broadcaster Piers Morgan, speculating that deportation flights to Rwanda for migrants will commence before the next general election.
The wager unfolded during an interview on TalkTV, where Piers Morgan challenged the Prime Minister, offering a £1,000 donation to a refugee charity if “you don’t get anybody on those planes before the election.”
Responding to Morgan’s proposal, Sunak expressed his commitment to ensuring the flights take off, stating, “I want to get the people on the planes. Of course, I want to get the people on the planes.”
While Sunak did not explicitly agree to the bet verbally, the two men sealed the agreement with a handshake. In the exchange, Morgan emphasized the £1,000 amount, prompting Sunak to reiterate his dedication to the cause, saying, “I want to get the people on the planes. I am working incredibly hard to get the people on the planes.”
The backdrop of this wager is Sunak’s Rwanda Bill, a legislative proposal from the government intended to facilitate the initiation of deportation flights. The bill is currently progressing through the House of Lords after receiving approval from the House of Commons. The outcome of this bet adds an intriguing dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding migration policies and deportation efforts.
