The highly anticipated Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is reportedly facing significant delays as it undergoes a complete overhaul, with developers restarting the project from scratch.
Originally announced during Ubisoft Forward in 2020, the remake of the beloved Sands of Time faced criticism early on, prompting Ubisoft to hand the reins over to veteran developer Ubisoft Montreal. With the original release date set for 2021 and development initially handled by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, the project encountered numerous setbacks, leading to a decision to revamp the game entirely.
According to recent reports from Insider Gaming, the remake, now under the helm of Ubisoft Montreal, is being reconstructed from the ground up. Leaked footage suggests that the game is still in its early stages, with noticeable missing textures indicating a lengthy development timeline ahead.
Moreover, the remake is said to be adopting a more realistic approach, with improved graphics, animations, and mechanics compared to its previous iteration. Surprisingly, lead voice actor Yuri Lowenthal, known for his portrayal of Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider-Man games, will not be reprising his role as the Prince, signaling further changes to the project.
In a separate development, rumors are circulating about a new Prince of Persia title with roguelike gameplay in the works. Allegedly being developed by Evil Empire, the studio behind Dead Cells, this potential entry into the franchise suggests Ubisoft’s willingness to explore different genres within the Prince of Persia universe. This follows the success of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which departed from the traditional action-adventure format to embrace a side-scrolling approach.
While fans eagerly await updates on the Sands of Time remake, it seems that the Prince of Persia franchise is poised to embark on new and innovative ventures, promising fresh experiences for players in the future.
