Warner Bros. is quietly developing a film set in George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project is still in the early stages, with no director, cast, or writer attached. However, the studio is keen to bring Westeros to the big screen.
A change in strategy
This move marks a potential shift in Warner Bros.’ approach to the Game of Thrones franchise. Previously, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had proposed ending the original series with three feature films instead of the 2019 final season. Martin supported the idea and mentioned in 2014 that discussions were taking place. Despite this, HBO chose to keep the series exclusive to its network, aiming to maintain its prestige.
Evolving perspectives
Since the end of the original show, HBO and Warner Bros. have undergone significant changes in leadership and strategy. Casey Bloys now leads HBO, while Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy head the film studio. The boundary between film and TV has blurred, with franchises like The Batman leading to HBO’s spinoff The Penguin and Dune spawning the Dune: Prophecy TV series. HBO is also working on a new TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, while Warner Bros. is developing new Lord of the Rings films alongside Amazon’s The Rings of Power series. This evolving trend makes it less surprising that Game of Thrones may soon expand into film.
Successes and future projects
In 2022, HBO launched the successful prequel series House of the Dragon, which recently completed its second season. The network is also set to release A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2025. While most projects have focused on prequels, a film could explore new storylines set after the original series.
Game of Thrones content has been shown in cinemas before, with special screenings of major episodes to promote the show. This potential film would be the first to fully transition the epic world of Westeros to the big screen.
