Apparently, living at Number 10 isn’t all state dinners and catered events. Boris Johnson confessed to countless failed takeaway attempts, thanks to Downing Street’s tight security. Armed police routinely turned delivery drivers away, leaving Boris kebab-less and frustrated.
To bypass the issue, he started redirecting his orders to 70 Whitehall, a nearby address with a more relaxed approach to takeaway logistics. But even that came with its own complications.
Boxer Shorts Diplomacy
In what can only be described as a nightmare for delivery drivers, Johnson admitted to traipsing through Downing Street in his boxer shorts (or “whatever I was wearing at the time”) to retrieve his food. Once at Whitehall, he’d have to convince security guards the kebabs were his – often to no avail, as the drivers had already given up and gone home.
“I’d pad down to 70 Whitehall in my boxers and try to persuade the guards to let the kebabs through,” he recounted. “By then, they’d probably gone home again.”
A Tasty Distraction from Controversy
Johnson’s tenure as Prime Minister was marred by scandals like Partygate, but this anecdote adds a more humorous footnote to his time in office. While his successor Liz Truss may have lasted just 49 days, she at least avoided being known as “the boxer shorts kebab guy.”
Kebab Freedom at Last
These days, Boris is free to enjoy all the late-night takeaways he wants, without armed guards or baffled delivery drivers to contend with. As he put it, ordering food while in office was “a nightmare” – though, frankly, it sounds like a bigger nightmare for the poor delivery drivers caught in the crossfire.
Who knew running a country and getting a kebab could be equally tricky?
