Suella Braverman, the former home secretary, has never been one to shy away from controversy. But her latest comments might just take the cake. Speaking at the right-wing Heritage Foundation think-tank in Washington, Braverman suggested the UK could become “the first Islamist nation with nuclear weapons.” Yes, you read that right.
A Comparison to Iran?
Braverman didn’t stop there. She warned that Britain could “fall into the hands of Muslim fundamentalism” and end up resembling Iran. “What happens if the UK falls into the hands of Muslim fundamentalism, our legal system gets substituted for Sharia Law, and our nuclear capabilities vest in a regime not too dissimilar to that of Iran today?” she asked.
While she admitted this scenario might not be “realistic,” she argued it’s a question worth asking. “Should we not have the courage to ask these questions?” she said.
A Divided UK-US Relationship?
Braverman also took aim at Keir Starmer, claiming the Labour leader “could not be more at odds” with Donald Trump. This comes despite Trump praising Starmer just days ago, calling him a “very good person” who’s “done a very good job thus far.” The two even had a friendly 45-minute phone call on Sunday, though they reportedly avoided touchy subjects.
But Braverman wasn’t having it. She claimed the UK-US relationship now “lies in tatters” under Starmer’s leadership. “The UK is now more likely than ever to worship at the altar of punitive net zero policies, bend the knee at the cross of a distorted notion of human rights, and submit to the will of supranational institutions,” she said.
