Liz Truss has managed to make headlines again—and not for the right reasons. The former (very short-lived) Prime Minister has been widely mocked after a speech in the US where she called for a Trump-style MAGA movement in Britain.
Truss takes MAGA to Washington
Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, Truss railed against the ‘deep state’, attacked judges, and even suggested that Britain should have its own version of CPAC and MAGA-style politics.
In front of what The Mirror described as a “tiny crowd”, she declared:
“The same people are still making the decisions. It’s the deep state, it’s the unelected bureaucrats, it’s the judiciary.”
And she wasn’t done.
“I think what ultimately will happen, what I hope to see, is a movement like you have in the US with MAGA, with CPAC… that ultimately pushes change we all want. We want to have a British CPAC.”
Because if there’s one thing Britain is crying out for, it’s a CPAC knock-off and even more political chaos.
Blaming the judges (again)
Truss also took aim at the judiciary, accusing British judges of “making decisions that should be made by politicians” and claiming they are “no longer accountable”.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that until those changes are reversed, we do not have a functioning country.”
For a politician whose own decision-making crashed the economy in record time, she seems very keen to lecture others on governance.
Social media reacts: ‘Embarrassing’
Unsurprisingly, the speech did not go down well on X (formerly Twitter).
One person summed up the mood perfectly:
“Liz Truss is the most embarrassing thing the UK will ever export. I wish they’d tariff her.”
Others weren’t impressed either, branding the speech “irrelevant, unwatchable, and not in the slightest bit amusing”.
Given her historical ability to tank confidence—in markets and in herself—perhaps Truss should consider taking a break from politics. Preferably somewhere far, far away from a microphone.
