US Senator Jeff Merkley went straight to the point this week. Speaking at the Foreign Relations Committee, he asked a bold question—is Donald Trump a Russian asset?
His concerns weren’t random. Reports recently claimed the Kremlin had courted Trump decades ago. So, Merkley listed five actions that, in his view, seem more pro-Russia than pro-America.
Merkley’s Five-Point Argument
He argued that Trump has:
🟢 Spread Russian propaganda—claiming Ukraine started the war.
🟢 Called Zelenskyy a dictator.
🟢 Cut off US arms shipments to Ukraine.
🟢 Weakened ties between the US and Europe.
🟢 Undermined Zelenskyy on the world stage.
Then, he dropped a stinging line:
“What else could a Russian asset possibly do that Trump hasn’t already done?”
Trump’s Nominee Avoids a Direct Answer
Former US Ambassador to Mexico, Christopher Landau, jumped in to defend Trump. But instead of denying the claims, he changed the subject.
“No, he is not a Russian asset. He is an elected official. President Trump is an exceptionally gifted dealmaker. His top priority is to end this savage war. He is probably the only person in the universe who could actually stop this.”
Merkley didn’t seem convinced. And let’s be honest—that wasn’t exactly a no.
