I Am Legend: The Sequel, starring Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan, was revealed last year. The original movie’s director recently discussed his prospective involvement with the project.
In 2007, Will Smith starred in I Am Legend, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller based on the novel by Richard Matheson. Smith played Robert Neville, a military scientist who survived a deadly virus that turned most of humanity into zombie-like creatures and struggled to find a cure while battling loneliness, fear, and an aggressive mutant leader.
The film was a commercial success, grossing over $585 million worldwide, and received mostly positive reviews for its tense atmosphere, emotional depth, and Smith’s intense performance. However, the ending, which differs from the book’s ending, divided audiences and left some room for a possible sequel.
In 2011, Akiva Goldsman, the producer of I Am Legend, announced that a sequel was in development, with Smith attached to reprise his role as Neville. However, the project faced several setbacks, including script revisions, director changes, and Smith’s busy schedule, and eventually got shelved in 2012.
Fast forward to 2021, and the idea of another I Am Legend movie, this time starring Michael B. Jordan, has resurfaced. According to Deadline, Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society, has signed a deal with Warner Bros. to produce a “new take” on the I Am Legend franchise, with Jordan likely to star as the lead and potentially direct as well.
Lawrence revealed to ComicBook that he has spoken with writer Akiva Goldsman, who will return for the sequel, and that he’d love to take over the director’s chair if given the chance.
“I have spoken to Akiva [Goldsman] a little bit about it, but I think that is still a ways away. I’d love to do it,” Lawrence said. “I’ve heard some things about I Am Legend. We actually don’t have much, just brainstorming things for Constantine, but I’m sworn to secrecy on I Am Legend.”
Currently, all that is known about the movie’s sequel is that Smith and Goldsman will return and that Jordan will star.
More as we get it.
