American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg.
The high-profile journalist had been included on a chat on the commercial messaging app in which a military strike on the Houthi rebels in Yemen was coordinated – including discussions of the timing of the attack, debates about political messaging, personnel coordination and weapons to be used – seemingly without anyone noticing that he was there.
The plans were shared in a group chat on messaging app Signal that included senior government officials, including vice president JD Vance and defence secretary Pete Hegseth, as well as Jeffrey Goldberg.
Donald Trump said the texting of sensitive plans was “the only glitch in two months” and a non-issue. He said he believed the chat contained “no classified information”.
