Twister, which debuted in 1996, was unlike anything moviegoers had ever seen. The epic disaster film, about a crew of amateur storm chasers attempting to do tornado research in Oklahoma, dazzled viewers with its ground-breaking visual effects.
With approximately $500 million in worldwide box office receipts and two Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound, the movie was a big hit. The long-awaited Twisters sequel movie was finally revealed after more than 25 years of waiting.
Universal Pictures first started making arrangements for a Twister revival in June 2020. Variety stated that Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick, was in negotiations to helm the picture at the time.
In October 2022, more than two years later, Deadline reported that Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg’s production business, Amblin Entertainment, were meeting with directors to begin work on the sequel, which at that point had been given the name Twisters.
Spielberg, who served as a producer on the first movie, is said to have seen the sequel’s script and assisted in getting the production approved.
The Twister sequel was confirmed to be happening in December 2022, along with the release date announced. Lee Isaac Chung was also announced as the director, per Variety.
