Theresea Coffey had a nightmare in the Commons today.
She was questioned by MPs in Parliament today about fruit and vegetable shortages in the UK.
Eating turnips will help ease the shortages of fruit and vegetables hitting supermarkets across the UK, the environment secretary suggested in the Commons today.
Cherish
Ms Coffey replied: “It’s important to make sure that we cherish the specialisms that we have in this country.
“A lot of people would be eating turnips right now rather than thinking necessarily about aspects of lettuce, and tomatoes and similar but I’m conscious that consumers want a year-round choice and that is what our supermarkets, food producers and growers around the world try to satisfy.”
Shortages of some fruits and vegetables may last as long as another month she revealed.
Brexit
Of course she never blamed Brexit for the lack of fresh food.
It comes as Tesco joined other major UK supermarkets in limiting sales of certain fruit and vegetables.
However, Brexit could well be to blame.
Save British Farming chair Liz Webster said: “I keep hearing that Spain is being blamed for the food shortages in Britain, and this is just absolute nonsense.
“The reason that we have food shortages in Britain and that we don’t have food shortages in Spain – or anywhere else in the European Union – is because of Brexit, and also because of this disastrous Conservative government that has no interest in food production, farming or even food supply
“That’s why we are in this mess.
“The Conservatives with their Brexit messed up our trade. This also impacted our labour supply because it ended freedom of movement. It also removed the cap and food subsidies.
“Then add on top of that the Ukraine war, Covid and inflation. All of this predicted and predictable. We have been telling them they need to act on it.
“But they didn’t do that and now it’s too late to do anything .”
She went on: “The only option now to cure the food shortage problem now is to make sure we get back in the single market and customs union as quickly as possible.
“That is the only quick fix open now.”
Shocking response
But this wasn’t even the bad bit for Coffey!
Luke Pollard asked her: “It’s 2023 & there’s crops rotting in the fields.. kids are going hungry in our communities & now we have rationing in supermarkets… unless she wants to go down as the SoS for sewage, food shortages & rural poverty.. what is her plan.”
You have to listen to her reply, as it would be pretty much impossible to write down!
Watch
Then she blamed the sewage crisis on LABOUR!
Then said everywhere else is having issues, but that claim has been called out on social media by many people in supermkarets walking around European mainland supermakrets and taking pics of a LOT of fresh food!
