The upcoming live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has a release date set by Disney.
According to Variety, the announcement comes as the House of Mouse finalises release dates for several films, including Inside Out 2 on June 14, 2024, and Mufasa: The Lion King on July 5, 2024.
The release date for the new Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler as the titular Disney princess, has been set for March 22, 2024.
The classic fairy tale of a young, beautiful princess who, under the watchful eye of an envious queen, seeks refuge at the home of seven dwarfs in the German countryside and must bravely confront the truth of her mother’s death since her childbirth is brought to life in this live-action adaptation of Walt Disney’s first animated film.
As with Disney’s $1 billion success Aladdin, the movie will feature new plot aspects and characters to offer the retelling something fresh to fans.
Who will star in Snow White?
Marc Webb directed the live-action adaptation, which was based on a screenplay written by Greta Gerwig and Erssida Wilson.
The film also stars Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, in addition to Zegler in the lead.Â
Martin Klebba has also confirmed that he will play Grumpy in the film, but no other details about the dwarfs have been revealed.
Following Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage‘s criticism of the Snow White remake, there has been some speculation about how the dwarfs will be depicted in the film.
Dinklage felt it was contradictory for Disney to cast a Latina actress as Snow White while also including dwarf characters, which he felt were stereotypical caricatures of little people in the original animated film.
“Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Dinklage said on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast. “Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me… You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that f***ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f*** are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soap box? I guess I’m not loud enough.”
