A contract has been struck between New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. to make additional Lord of the Rings movies. Despite the lack of information regarding upcoming films, it is obvious that they will not be remakes or rehash previously studied Middle World territory.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav made the announcement during a conference call to discuss the company’s Q4 2022 financial results. The agreement was broken with Embracer Group, who bought the film rights to the property in August 2022. The Lord of the Rings trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and the subsequent Hobbit movies were produced by Warner Bros. and New Line.

A statement from Warner Bros Pictures Group Co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Addy indicate that the films will not explore the territory covered by those films. They said, “But for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.”

Warner Bros. and New Line have already started work on one Lord of the Rings movie. The animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which is about one of Rohan’s famous kings and takes place 183 years before the events of the first two movies, is about that king.
