We’re getting a new I Know What You Did Last Summer film, it’s official.
According to a 6 February report from Deadline, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will helm a sequel to the well-liked 1997 horror movie starring Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Freddie Prinze Jr.
The film will be the fourth installment in the Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel “I Know What You Did Last Summer”-inspired slasher-movie series. In 2021, the narrative was also turned into a TV show on Amazon Prime, although it was cancelled after only one season. Sony Pictures is currently bringing the series back to theatres.
The three prior installments depict a gang of teens who mistakenly kill a man and then dispose of his body in the ocean to conceal the crime while details of the new movie are still being kept under wraps.
They make a pact to never talk about what happened, but a year later, when they get a threatening letter from someone claiming to know their terrible secret, they are forced to relive the accident. Soon later, a killer with a hook starts stalking them.
The cast hasn’t been officially announced, however, rumour has it Hewitt and Prinze Jr., who starred in the first two I Know What You Did Last Summer films, are in talks to reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively.
Deadline reports the upcoming film won’t be a reboot. Instead, Sony Pictures is hoping to tell a “passing of the torch”-type story that will revolve around Hewitt and Prinze Jr.’s characters while also introducing new faces for a modern audience.
