Finally Downing Street has admitted that “new processes” brought in after Brexit has contributed to travel chaos at the Port of Dover.
However, Suella Braverman was accused of being in “complete denial” after she claimed on Sunday it was unfair to say the huge hold-ups at Dover were “an adverse effect of Brexit”.
It comes as the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) called for “crisis talks” with the government, the Kent port and ferry companies to “resolve this mess once and for all”.
Post-Brexit checks
Asked about the role of post-Brexit checks, the spokesman acknowledged that French officials are now required inspect and stamp every passport as passengers leave the UK.
“Obviously we recognise there are new processes in place,” Mr Sunak’s spokesman said on the manual checks.
However according to the home secretary Suella Braverman, who never seems quite on top of her brief, the massive queues at Dover are nothing at all to do with Brexit:
“No, I don’t think that’s fair to say that this has been an adverse effect of Brexit. We’ve had many years now since leaving the European Union and there’s been, on the whole, very good operations and processes at the border.”
Here Calder is again…
To be fair Tobias Ellwood be the only one of his party that is honest about Brexit being the cause of the delays in Dover…yesterday!
