Brexit has raised its economic ugly head again, this time a major car maker is threatening to leave the UK, as Brexit issues are making business too much hassle. The news has angered many including Carol Voderman.
Vauxhall and Fiat manufacturer Stellantis has urged the government to renegotiate rules or it could put thousands of jobs at risk, by moving where they manufacture their vehicles.
It is the world’s fourth-biggest carmaker, which also produces Citroën and Peugeot vehicles.
Only only two years ago the organisation announced that the future of its electric car plants in Ellesmere Port and Luton were safe, but this there might be a change of plan.
Trade rule
Sadly, it now says the business can no longer meet rules in the post-Brexit trade deal that require 45% of parts by value to be sourced in the UK or EU by 2024.
This is due to a rise in raw material costs used in electric car batteries during Covid and the energy crisis.
Would Labour do anything different?
On BBC breakfast news presenter Sally Nugent told the Labour leader that ‘Vauxhall say they need the govt to renegotiate part of the brexit deal.. would you renegotiate?
Starmer replied: “we’re not going to re-enter the EU, but we do need to improve that deal… the deal was said to be oven ready, but it wasn’t even half baked.”
