Warner Bros. TV Group CEO Channing Dungey has stated that the business is in talks to expand its Harry Potter television repertoire in light of the success of the Harry Potter reunion and competition shows.
Dungey was questioned by Variety if there would be another Harry Potter-based television project as she was speaking at the U.K. TV convention Content London.
This follows the popularity of the HBO Harry Potter reunion and the Helen Mirren-hosted game show Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Heroes, both of which debuted in 2017.
“There is a tremendous amount of ambition for that and we are engaged in a number of different conversations,” Dungey said, before stating that though there’s not much more to discuss at the moment, but the fanbase for Harry Potter continues to be as active and passionate as ever.
“I wish I could tell you that something was imminent on the horizon but there is a lot of interest and a lot of passion for it, so absolutely,” said Dungey. “What’s great is that you see how the audience is so engaged and so ready.
Our unscripted team did a fantastic Return to Hogwarts special for HBO last year, that resonated so tremendously, then we did a quiz show, The Tournament of Houses, that Helen Mirren was the host for. The audience is ready, they want to go, so we’re just [trying] to figure out what the right next step is.”
Despite the fact that the Fantastic Beast films’ underwhelming box office returns have left the universe of Harry Potter movies in limbo, it appears that Warner Bros. Discovery has a lot riding on the Harry Potter franchise as a whole.
We’ll have to wait and see if that manifests in fresh storylines or just more Harry Potter-related television.
