Fans of Wednesday can now breathe a sigh of relief after Netflix decided to continue the popular fantasy drama for a second season.
Jenna Ortega (Scream) plays the gothic comedic character Wednesday Addams in the show, which set streaming service ratings records. This led many to believe that a sequel was a sure thing.
Although it was rumoured that the show was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), the venerable Hollywood studio recently acquired by rival Amazon, it took Netflix a while to confirm as much.
Now that Netflix has officially said that a second season is coming and the programme will remain where it is for the time being, rumours that it could be acquired by Prime Video have been dispelled.
Showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough told Netflix’s TUDUM: “We can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky, spooky world of Nevermore.
“We just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.”
They added: “We’re thrilled to continue Wednesday’s torturous journey into season 2.”
Ortega has also thanked fans for their support ahead of season 2, Tweeting: “Thanks to everyone who made this upcoming season possible. This has all been pretty surreal.”
Filming on the Tim Burton project lasted six months, beginning in September 2021 and wrapping in March 2022, so it stands to reason that the follow-up will stick to a similar timeframe.
With filming likely to take place later this year and a significant chunk of post-production required to polish the show’s visual effects, we predict that Wednesday season 2 will late 2023.
