The Daily Wire, a conservative media outlet, has unveiled plans to create a live-action rendition of Snow White, a move seen as a response to the controversy surrounding Disney’s upcoming adaptation of the classic fairy tale.
The film, titled Snow White and the Evil Queen, features YouTuber Brett Cooper in the lead role, marking the company’s foray into the realm of children’s entertainment. Jeremy Boreing, co-founder of The Daily Wire, described the project as an adaptation of the original Brothers Grimm tale, now in the public domain.
Speaking at the launch of Bentkey, The Daily Wire’s new kids’ entertainment brand, Boreing expressed aspirations for the company to rival Disney’s influence in the industry. He remarked, “While Disney still uses Walt’s name, they have all but abandoned his legacy.”
Cooper, known for hosting The Comments Section With Brett Cooper, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the timeless values embedded in the story. “Snow White is such a beautiful character, and I’m honored to be playing her,” he said.
Here’s why Live-Action Snow White has been controversial
The decision to produce a competing Snow White film comes amid controversy surrounding Disney’s version. Critics have raised objections to the casting of Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress, in the titular role, as well as alterations to the story and characters.
Zegler’s comments about the original film and the direction of the new adaptation have also stirred debate. She expressed a desire for the character to embody qualities of leadership rather than focusing solely on a romantic narrative.
David Hand, a former Disney designer, voiced disapproval of Disney’s approach, criticizing what he perceived as radical changes to the beloved story. He accused the studio of lacking respect for the legacy of the original film and its creators.
Snow White and the Evil Queen is slated for release in 2024, while Disney’s Snow White is scheduled to hit theaters on March 21, 2025.
