Another well-known actor who has already collaborated with the seasoned director has joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel.
Denzel Washington is reportedly in the final stages of contract negotiations to appear in the sequel, which will begin filming this summer, according to Deadline.
Washington and Scott reunite 16 years after working together on the popular crime drama American Gangster.
Although specifics are being kept under wraps, Deadline reports that it’s a “bad-ass” role that Washington, who is extremely selective about the jobs he accepts, truly connected with. Even though they weren’t sure if he would agree to play the part, it was actually written for the actor.
The run of big-name castings was kicked off by the announcement that Normal People and Aftersun actor Paul Mescal would be leading the film as Lucius. The character is the son of Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus, who was saved by Russell Crowe’s Maximus in the first film.
Meanwhile, The Banshees of Inisherin and The Batman actor Barry Keoghan has also been cast in the film, and will be playing Emperor Geta.
