After the massive success of Netflix and Tim Burton’s spin on The Addams Family with Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, it’s no surprise that fans are eagerly awaiting Season 2. In January 2023, just three months after the first season’s debut, Netflix officially renewed the show for a second season. The first season became Netflix’s most-watched original series, racking up more than 252 million views, surpassing even Stranger Things and Bridgerton.
Additionally, Wednesday made waves at the 2023 Emmy Awards, receiving 12 nominations. Jenna Ortega, who portrays the iconic character, was nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming only the third Latina ever nominated in this category. Although she missed out on the award to Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), the show won four Emmys, solidifying its place as one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed series of the year.
When Will Season 2 Premiere?
Fans will have to exercise patience, as Netflix has slated Season 2 for release in 2025. The delay is partly due to the Hollywood strikes in 2023, which disrupted production schedules across the entertainment industry.
Is Season 2 in Production?
Yes, Season 2 is in production. Filming was delayed by the Hollywood strikes, but it was confirmed in November 2023 that production would begin in late April 2024. This time, filming will take place in Ireland, unlike Season 1, which was shot in Romania. The move was necessary due to logistical challenges in Romania, despite its growing popularity as a tourist hotspot after the show’s success.
During an interview promoting Beetlejuice 2, Jenna Ortega shared that four episodes of Season 2 had already been shot before the strikes paused production.
What Can We Expect from Season 2?
While not much has been revealed about the plot, co-creators Al Gough and Miles Millar have hinted that more Addams family members may make an appearance in the new season. Although the specifics remain a mystery, Netflix has already confirmed plans for a spinoff centred around Uncle Fester, played by Fred Armisen in Season 1.
One relationship that may receive more attention in Season 2 is Wednesday’s complex dynamic with her mother, Morticia, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman (Gomez), and Isaac Ordonez (Pugsley) have been promoted to series regulars, suggesting that the family dynamic will play a more prominent role.
Jenna Ortega, who has also been promoted to an executive producer role, mentioned that Season 2 will focus more on horror rather than teen romance. “It’s a lot more action-packed, and each episode will feel more like a movie,” she said during an interview at the Emmys.
Who’s Returning for Season 2?
Most of the original cast will return, including Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Guzman as Gomez, and Ordonez as Pugsley. Additionally, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo (Sheriff Deputy Ritchie Santiago) has also been promoted to a series regular.
However, Percy Hynes White (Xavier), Jamie McShane (Sheriff Donovan Galpin), and Naomi J. Ogawa (Yoko Tanaka) will not be returning in a full-time capacity, with McShane listed as a guest star.
New Faces in Season 2
Several new actors will join Wednesday for its second season, including the legendary Joanna Lumley as Grandmama, Thandiwe Newton as Dr Fairburn, and The Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment. Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, and Frances O’Connor have also been confirmed to appear, though Buscemi’s role remains undisclosed. Uncle Fester will continue to be portrayed by Fred Armisen, and Christopher Lloyd, who famously played Fester in the Addams Family films, will guest star.
How to Watch Wednesday
Just like the first season, Wednesday Season 2 will stream exclusively on Netflix. The platform offers various tiered subscription plans to suit different viewing needs.
