It is 25 years since the Fully Monty became a global hit. Now a spin of series, with the original cast, is back for a series.
Peter Cattaneo’s 1997 comedy followed an unlikely group of men turning to stripping to earn a living after the steel mill they work in shuts down, amid growing poverty in the UK, especially the north.
The original film landed an Oscar for best original musical or comedy score and was nominated for three other gongs, including best picture and best director.
The Sheffield steel-workers turned strippers are back as they navigate the South Yorkshire City with its crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors.
The eight-episode series sequel that picks up 25 years later with the original film’s cast.
The first trailer shows how the city of Sheffield has fared — and why things may not have gotten any easier for our unlikely group of male strippers.

Writers
One of the writers Simon Beaufoy told the Guardian: “The political destruction wreaked by successive governments wasn’t about destroying industry; it was the infrastructure of the country they’d come to asset-strip, slowly and incredibly successfully. Schools, hospitals, dental care, social care, mental health care, transport, the courts, water: all of the structures that allow people in need to function were now on the edge of collapse. So, the idea took shape of going back to Sheffield.”
The other writer Alice Nutter told the paper: “With the welfare safety net being scrapped, the original ethos of the film was utterly salient to now and we knew we could carry that through. And we also knew that we could do this without repeating ourselves and having the Monty men taking their clothes off.”
Then and now
This is brilliant….
