Previous films – Spoiler alert!
- Hellboy (2004): Directed by Guillermo del Toro, this is the first film in the Hellboy series. Ron Perlman plays the titular character, and the film follows Hellboy’s origin story as he is summoned to Earth during World War II by the evil sorcerer Grigori Rasputin. Raised by Professor Bruttenholm (played by John Hurt), Hellboy becomes a paranormal investigator for the B.P.R.D. The movie combines elements of supernatural horror and action-adventure. It was well-received by fans and critics alike and helped establish Hellboy as a cinematic character.
- Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008): Also directed by Guillermo del Toro, this is the sequel to the 2004 film. Ron Perlman returns as Hellboy, and the film delves deeper into the character’s relationships and his struggle to belong in the human world. In this installment, Hellboy and his team must prevent an ancient army of magical creatures from being awakened and wreaking havoc on the world. Like its predecessor, Hellboy II received positive reviews for its imaginative storytelling and creature designs.
In addition to these two major films, there was a reboot of the Hellboy franchise:
- Hellboy (2019): Directed by Neil Marshall, this film is a reboot of the Hellboy series, with David Harbour taking on the role of Hellboy. The 2019 film aimed for a darker and more mature tone compared to the del Toro films. It received mixed to negative reviews from both critics and fans, and its box office performance was also disappointing.
