In the wake of the triumphant release of Sing 2 in late 2021, Illumination has officially declared that Sing 3 is currently in the works.
The original Sing movie from 2016 received widespread acclaim from both fans and critics, amassing a staggering $634 million worldwide. This success paved the way for the sequel, Sing 2, which not only garnered positive reviews but also emerged as a streaming sensation amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.
One of the standout features of the first two Sing films has been the star-studded cast, including Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, and Matthew McConaughey. Additionally, the animated movies have captivated audiences with their heartfelt stories that breathe life into an array of remarkable characters.
Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, recently confirmed to Variety that Sing 3 is “deep into development.” Meledandri teased that the upcoming installment will transport fans “into a new world” while assuring that characters from the original cast will be part of the journey.
The return of the original cast indicates a reunion of the ensemble that played a crucial role in the success of the first two films. Sing 2, despite facing challenges during its theatrical release due to the Omicron COVID-19 wave, achieved significant box office success, surpassing $400 million. Moreover, it became the third most-streamed movie overall in the United States in 2022, accumulating over 80 million streams on Netflix.
Meledandri emphasized that the streaming triumph of Sing 2 is a clear signal of fans’ desire to remain immersed in the vibrant world of these beloved characters. He stated, “We don’t just look at box office. We gauge the audience response in different ways. The streaming success of ‘Sing 2’ signals that fans want to stay in this world with these characters.”
As for the potential storyline of Sing 3, theories abound. The conclusion of Sing 2 left characters such as Buster, Rosita, Johnny, and others celebrating their successful show, recruiting star lion Clay Calloway out of retirement, and overcoming media mogul Jimmy Crystal. The happy ending hinted at potential opportunities with The Majestic theater.
With Sing 3 confirmed, speculations arise about exploring the aftermath of the team’s success or possibly delving into a storyline set years after Sing 2. The latter narrative could revolve around a reunion of the core group for another show, offering a compelling storyline that accentuates the franchise’s core dynamic.
As Sing 3 progresses in development, fans eagerly await more concrete details about the next chapter in this animated musical saga.
