Get your putters ready! Adam Sandler is back as the legendary Happy Gilmore nearly 29 years after the original cult classic had us all trying to whack golf balls like hockey pucks. Netflix dropped the first teaser for Happy Gilmore 2 on Christmas Day, sneaking it in alongside their first-ever NFL game broadcasts. The sequel, coming in 2025, promises laughs, rivalries, and, of course, some highly questionable golf swings.
A Star-Studded Line-Up
Joining Sandler’s Happy Gilmore are some familiar faces, including Julie Bowen reprising her role as Virginia Venit, Happy’s endlessly patient love interest, and Christopher McDonald, back as the delightfully slimy Shooter McGavin. Who doesn’t want to see more of their verbal sparring (and possibly another brawl on the green)?
But there are some fresh additions to the sequel, too. Bad Bunny is swinging into action, joined by The Substance star Margaret Qualley, Sandler’s frequent sidekick Nick Swardson, NFL legend Travis Kelce, Kid Cudi, and even Benny Safdie, who directed Sandler in the critically acclaimed Uncut Gems. With this roster, expect some wild hijinks and plenty of awkward-yet-brilliant cameos.
Behind the Camera
Kyle Newacheck, who directed Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in Netflix’s Murder Mystery, takes the reins for this much-anticipated sequel. Co-writing the script is Tim Herlihy, who penned the original Happy Gilmore, ensuring that the follow-up keeps its goofy, heartfelt charm intact. Dennis Dugan, director of the first film, returns as an executive producer, alongside Jack Giarraputo and Robert Simonds.
A Look Back at the Legend
For those who somehow missed the original (do you even golf, bro?), Happy Gilmore followed Sandler’s out-of-control hockey player-turned-unlikely golf sensation as he tries to pay off his nan’s tax bill. What ensues is a chaotic mix of poorly executed swings, anger management fails, and a hilariously over-the-top rivalry with Shooter McGavin. Oh, and let’s not forget that iconic fight with Bob Barker from The Price Is Right. If that’s not reason enough to revisit the classic, what is?
What’s Next for Happy?
While details of the sequel are still under wraps, the teaser promises plenty of shenanigans. With Shooter McGavin back in the mix and an ensemble cast ready to stir up the drama, fans can expect even more outlandish moments. Can Happy still hold his own on the course nearly three decades later? And will Shooter finally get his comeuppance (again)?
We’ll have to wait until 2025 to find out, but one thing’s for sure: Happy Gilmore 2 is already shaping up to be a hole-in-one of hilarity.
