Sophie Turner is close to finalising her role as Lara Croft in Amazon’s new Tomb Raider TV series, sources confirm. While the deal isn’t yet fully signed, it’s expected to be completed soon. Turner will bring to life the iconic archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, who both portrayed Croft in previous film adaptations.
A New Era for Lara Croft
The upcoming Tomb Raider series, written and produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge under her Amazon deal, was greenlit earlier this year. This announcement marks the latest development in the Tomb Raider franchise, which first began with the popular video game series and expanded into global pop culture. Amazon MGM Studios and Crystal Dynamics, the game developer, are partnering to bring this fresh adaptation to life.
Turner’s Journey from Sansa Stark to Lara Croft
Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, gained critical acclaim throughout the series’ eight-season run. Her portrayal earned her an Emmy nomination for best supporting actress in 2019. She’s also known for playing Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix. Most recently, Turner starred in ITV’s Joan and the limited series The Staircase.
Production Team and Studio Collaboration
The Tomb Raider series is part of an expansive agreement between Crystal Dynamics, Amazon MGM Studios, and Legendary Television. Executive producers include Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins from Wells Street Productions, along with Dmitri M. Johnson from dj2 Entertainment. The project has the potential to be the first in a wider series of Tomb Raider stories developed through Amazon’s first-look deal with dj2 Entertainment.
Anticipation Builds for Turner’s Croft
Fans are eagerly awaiting this fresh take on Tomb Raider, hoping Turner will bring new depth to the character. With Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s distinctive storytelling and Turner’s talent, the series is set to capture both longtime fans and new audiences.
