Ben Stiller is returning as the notorious nursing home worker, Hal L., in the sequel to Adam Sandler’s classic sports comedy, Happy Gilmore 2.
Stiller was seen in costume on set in New Jersey, where he’ll rejoin Sandler (playing Happy Gilmore), Christopher McDonald (Shooter McGavin), and Julie Brown (Virginia Venit). According to Variety, Stiller’s character has aged noticeably but still sports his signature handlebar moustache.
While Netflix has yet to comment on Stiller’s return, set photos have confirmed his role. The long-awaited sequel was officially announced by Netflix in May, following years of speculation. The original Happy Gilmore, released in 1996, followed Happy’s journey from aspiring hockey star to unlikely golf sensation on the PGA Tour.
The original film was co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, with Dennis Dugan directing. Details on the writing and directing team for the sequel remain unknown, but several new cast members have joined, including Nick Swardson, Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, and NFL star Travis Kelce.
Sandler gave a sneak peek of the plot on the New Heights podcast, hinting, “The story picks up with an older Happy, who played golf ages ago. Life’s thrown him some curveballs, and he’s a bit of a mess. We’re diving into his journey as he tries to get his life back on track.”
