Disney has reportedly cancelled the UK premiere of its Snow White live-action remake, fearing a public backlash ahead of its March 21 release.
Instead of a grand London event, the studio will scale back press engagements, opting for private media screenings with tight security.
According to Metro UK, Disney expects an “anti-woke backlash” over the film. The Daily Mail also claims the studio is limiting interviews with lead actress Rachel Zegler to avoid controversy.
Press Junket Moved Out of the UK
Sources suggest no major interview events will take place in the UK. Instead, Disney will hold press opportunities elsewhere in Europe.
Earlier this week, the film kicked off its promotional campaign in Tokyo, where Zegler performed a new song, Waiting on a Wish, live on stage.
A Film Plagued by Controversy
From the moment Disney announced Zegler’s casting, the film has been surrounded by drama.
Criticism has ranged from:
- The film’s troubled production
- Zegler’s past comments on the original film
- Co-star Gal Gadot’s military background
Now, Disney seems keen to avoid unnecessary drama before the film even hits cinemas.
Will Snow White Be a Box Office Hit?
Despite the controversy, Snow White is projected to earn around $53 million in its opening weekend at the North American box office. Estimates range between $48 million and $58 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
However, if it lands on the lower end, it could continue Disney’s underwhelming streak of expensive blockbusters—following the mixed reception of Captain America: Brave New World.
Meanwhile, Disney’s next live-action remake, Lilo & Stitch, is just two months away—and still hasn’t had an official trailer. Could the live-action magic be wearing off?
