In a surprising turn of events for fans of the cult classic film “Happy Gilmore,” Christopher McDonald, renowned for his role as Shooter McGavin, has dropped a bombshell regarding the potential sequel.
During an interview on Audacy’s 92.3, as reported by Deadline, McDonald disclosed that a script for “Happy Gilmore 2” is currently in development, with Adam Sandler, the original star, at the helm. McDonald recounted a recent encounter with Sandler, where he was shown a draft of the sequel’s script. “I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” McDonald revealed. “He did show me that [script], and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”
While McDonald’s excitement was palpable, he did express a slight hesitation, suggesting his comments be edited out as he “didn’t want to be a liar.” Nevertheless, his endorsement of the project suggests a promising development for enthusiasts of the original movie.
Sources cited by Deadline indicate that if “Happy Gilmore 2” progresses, it will likely find its home on Netflix through Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison Productions. However, it’s anticipated that it will be some time before audiences can tee off with the sequel.
The announcement of a potential sequel comes 28 years after the release of the original “Happy Gilmore,” a film that left an indelible mark on audiences with its blend of humor and memorable characters. In the movie, Sandler portrays the eponymous protagonist, a former hockey player who transitions to golfing stardom overnight. McDonald’s portrayal of Shooter McGavin adds to the film’s charm, alongside other notable actors such as Julia Bowen, Kevin Nealon, Ben Stiller, and the late Carl Weathers.
Despite the passing of some of the original cast members, including Weathers and Bob Barker, who made a memorable cameo appearance, the prospect of a sequel has ignited excitement among fans.
As details about “Happy Gilmore 2” continue to emerge, enthusiasts eagerly await further updates on when and where they can catch up with their beloved characters. In the meantime, fans can revisit the original film or explore Adam Sandler’s extensive filmography, with “Happy Gilmore” undoubtedly standing out as a fan favorite.
