Speculation has been rife regarding the possibility of Warner Bros. developing a film adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” slated for a 2025 release.
The resurgence of the Harry Potter franchise commenced in 2016 with the release of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and the debut of “The Cursed Child” stage play, penned by Jack Thorne. This continuation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved series picks up 19 years after “The Deathly Hallows,” following the adventures of Harry Potter’s son, Albus, and Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius.
Recent buzz surrounding a potential movie adaptation stems from a viral concept trailer by Teaser PRO, featuring snippets from previous Wizarding World films alongside newer footage. Despite the excitement generated by this fan-made creation, there is currently no official development of a “Cursed Child” movie, and consequently, no plans for a 2025 release.
Reports suggest that Warner Bros. Discovery executives, including CEO David Zaslav, were once keen on pursuing the adaptation. However, challenges arose in securing key actors, with Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson reportedly expressing reservations due to controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling.
While Rupert Grint, who portrayed Ron Weasley, expressed openness to reprising his role under the right circumstances, Radcliffe conveyed a lack of immediate interest in revisiting the franchise. Despite this, he left the door slightly ajar, acknowledging that he’s “never going to say never.”
The passing of several original cast members, such as Michael Gambon, Robbie Coltrane, and Alan Rickman, further complicates the possibility of a faithful adaptation.
As Warner Bros. embarks on a Harry Potter reboot for its streaming platform, Max, featuring an all-new cast, the likelihood of “The Cursed Child” being incorporated remains uncertain. Given the extensive timeline planned for this series, it may be years before the story reaches the appropriate point for adaptation.
For now, fans may have to content themselves with the stage production or the published script book, although hopes persist for a recorded performance to be made available on Max in the future.
Warner Bros. has yet to announce a release schedule for its Harry Potter series on Max, leaving enthusiasts eagerly awaiting further updates.
