In a recent announcement by the Motion Picture Association (MPA), “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s “Joker,” has been officially rated R. The rating, disclosed in the MPA’s daily bulletin on Wednesday, cites the film’s content as including “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality and brief full nudity.”
This rating aligns with its predecessor, which was similarly classified R for “strong bloody violence, disturbing behavior, language, and brief sexual images.” Directed by Todd Phillips, “Joker: Folie à Deux” sees Joaquin Phoenix returning to his acclaimed role as the enigmatic Joker, with Lady Gaga joining the cast as his intriguing companion, Harley Quinn. The ensemble also includes Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, Variety previously reported in March that the film will predominantly take the form of a jukebox musical, incorporating approximately 15 reimagined renditions of well-known songs. Among these selections is rumored to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” popularized by Judy Garland. However, the soundtrack may also feature one or two original compositions.
Following the monumental success of the first “Joker” film, which earned over $1 billion globally and garnered 11 Oscar nominations, including a win for Joaquin Phoenix as Best Actor, anticipation for the sequel is palpable. Lady Gaga, known for her versatile talent across music and film, has also received acclaim for her performances in movies such as “A Star Is Born” and “House of Gucci.” Her portrayal of Ally in “A Star Is Born” earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars, with the song “Shallow” from the same film clinching the award for Best Original Song.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is slated for release in theaters on October 4, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures, promising to deliver another compelling chapter in the Joker saga.
