The iconic board game Monopoly is set to leap from the tabletop to the silver screen, as Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, partners with Lionsgate to bring the beloved real estate-inspired game to life in a live-action feature film.
Following their successful collaboration on the Barbie movie, Robbie, along with her LuckyChap partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara, is set to produce the Monopoly movie. Hasbro Entertainment, the creators of Monopoly, will also be involved in the production.
Lionsgate, having acquired development rights to the board game through its purchase of eOne, sees Monopoly as a global powerhouse, with a staggering 99% brand awareness worldwide. The game, available in over 100 countries since its inception in 1935, has sold nearly half a billion copies globally.
While the specifics of the movie’s storyline remain under wraps, it’s a challenge that Robbie and her team seem poised to tackle, given their success with the Barbie movie, which grossed $1.4 billion globally in 2023. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson expressed confidence in LuckyChap’s ability to deliver another blockbuster hit, praising their “clear point of view” on the project.
At the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, Fogelson announced the collaboration to an enthusiastic audience, highlighting the excitement surrounding the project. “Monopoly is a top property,” stated LuckyChap, acknowledging the game’s enduring popularity and its potential for cinematic adaptation.
“Like all of the best IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”
Hasbro Entertainment’s head of film, Zev Foreman, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting Monopoly’s status as an iconic game with vast storytelling potential. With LuckyChap and Lionsgate on board, Monopoly is poised to make a memorable transition to the big screen.
James Myers oversees the project for Lionsgate, while Robert Melnik spearheaded the studio’s negotiations. As development progresses, fans can anticipate a fresh take on the beloved board game, brought to life by the creative vision of Margot Robbie and the filmmaking expertise of Lionsgate.
