The latest trailer for A24’s upcoming film Y2K remixes former President Bill Clinton’s Y2K reassurance speech with a lively 90s montage. Directed by Saturday Night Live’s Kyle Mooney in his debut, the film promises a wild New Year’s Eve party gone wrong, set against the looming anxiety of the year 2000.
A Party with a Deadly Twist
The trailer opens with Rachel Zegler’s character voicing a panicked, “Someone’s on the net!” This sets the tone for a chaotic night where turn-of-the-century technology sparks havoc among party-goers. The story centres on two high school juniors who unexpectedly crash a New Year’s Eve celebration, only to find themselves in danger as computers and tech take over the event.
Clinton’s Y2K Message Takes a Dark Turn
The trailer remixes Clinton’s 1999 remarks on Y2K preparedness, merging nostalgia with a sense of foreboding. In a cheeky nod to the era, the trailer’s tagline reads, “Party like it’s 1999, or die like it’s Y2K.” The film’s poster, released with the trailer, depicts a power cord ominously dripping with blood—a playful yet chilling nod to the night’s impending chaos.
An Ensemble Cast to Watch
Featuring Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, Fred Durst, Mason Gooding, and Alicia Silverstone, the film boasts a strong cast, including Mooney himself. Co-written by Mooney and Evan Winter, Y2K showcases notable performances, especially from Julian Dennison. The film premiered at South by Southwest in March, where it received praise for its humour and suspenseful twists, even as critics pointed out areas for improvement in the story.
A Blend of Humour and Suspense
Y2K lands in cinemas on 6 December. With an eerie combination of suspense, humour, and nostalgia, Mooney’s directorial debut offers a unique perspective on millennial anxieties and a chance to relive the 90s—albeit with a darker twist.
