The blue blur is back—and he’s not slowing down any time soon! Paramount Pictures has confirmed they’re already hard at work on Sonic the Hedgehog 4, setting their sights on a spring 2027 release. This announcement comes just as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 zooms into cinemas this Friday.
While plot details for the fourth film remain as elusive as Sonic after a chilli dog binge, there’s no word yet on who will be penning or directing the next chapter. Jeff Fowler, who directed the first three films, has kept a firm grip on the franchise so far. He’s helmed Sonic 3 from a script by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. Will Fowler be back for round four? We’ll have to wait and see.
A Star-Studded Cast That Keeps Us Running Back
Sonic 3 welcomes back familiar faces and voices, including Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as the chaotic Dr. Robotnik (and his even wilder grandfather), and the lovable duo of James Marsden and Tika Sumpter.
Adding more star power, we’ve got Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow the Hedgehog (Matrix vibes, anyone?), Idris Elba returning as Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey lending her voice to the ever-adorable Tails. Krysten Ritter, Natasha Rothwell, and Shemar Moore also join the mix, rounding out a cast as eclectic as Robotnik’s gadget collection.
Sonic’s Smash Hit Streak
The franchise has been a financial goldmine, with the first two films raking in over $725 million globally. Since its speedy debut in February 2020, the Sonic series has sprinted past expectations, even spawning the Knuckles spin-off series on Paramount+ earlier this year.
Critics have been kind too. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter called Sonic 3 a “well-balanced, fast-paced blend of action and slapstick comedy” set in dazzling locations like Tokyo and London. It seems Sonic’s not just racing around loops—he’s taking the world by storm!
So, while fans buckle up for Sonic 3, it’s comforting to know that the franchise’s next lap is already in the works. Ready, set, spring 2027—here we come!
