A sequel to the popular Netflix film Under Paris is officially in the works. Following its record-breaking success this summer, the lead actress has confirmed that filming for the follow-up will begin at the end of 2025.
Huge Success Spurs Sequel
Directed by Xavier Gens, Under Paris became a major hit, tying in perfectly with the 2024 Olympic Games held in Paris. The film follows a scientist racing to prevent chaos as a giant shark prowls the Seine, the iconic river that cuts through the city.
Under Paris has become Netflix France’s most successful film, joining Lupin as the streaming giant’s most popular French production. It stayed in the global top 10 non-English films for 15 weeks, racking up 179.8 million viewing hours (equivalent to 130.9 million views). This makes it the second biggest non-English film on Netflix, just behind Norway’s Troll.
Lead Actress Hints at Plot
Speaking in an interview, the lead actress (translated to English) said, “We will start filming Under Paris 2 in September 2025. It won’t be a straightforward sequel; it’s a different story, but yes, the shark is still part of it.”
She also shared some interesting details about the original film’s impact: “Anne Hidalgo [the mayor of Paris] invited me to jump into the Seine with her. I turned it down. She even asked if she inspired the character of the mayor in the film. The role is actually a blend of her and Valérie Pécresse.” The actress revealed that she spent two months learning to dive in preparation for her role.
Director’s Hints at Future Projects
Director Xavier Gens had hinted at potential plans for a sequel during an interview with Variety over the summer. When asked about the possibility, he said, “At the moment, we’re not working on it, but discussions could happen soon. If we do a sequel, it would be set in a fully submerged Paris.”
Awaiting Netflix’s Official Announcement
Although Netflix has not officially announced the sequel on its social media channels, this recent interview suggests an announcement is imminent. What’s on Netflix reached out to representatives for Netflix France in mid-June to confirm whether a sequel had been greenlit but has yet to receive a response.
