In a highly anticipated move, Netflix has dropped the trailer for its upcoming live-action adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” scheduled for release in 2024.
For fans familiar with the animated Nickelodeon show, “The Last Airbender” delves into a world where four nations coexist, each governed by a distinct element: air, fire, water, and earth. Following an assault by the Fire Nation, the fate of the land rests on Aang (played by Gordon Cormier), the Avatar with the ability to control all the elements, to restore harmony.
According to the series’ official logline, “Alongside his newfound friends Sokka and Katara, siblings and members of the Southern Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a fantastical, action-packed quest to save the world and fight back against the fearsome onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai. But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko determined to capture them, it wonât be an easy task.”
The cast features Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko. Notable additions include Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh.
Albert Kim takes on the role of showrunner and executive producer, with Michael Goi and Jabbar Raisani directing and serving as executive producers alongside Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore from Rideback. Other directors include co-executive producer Roseanne Liang and Jet Wilkinson.
Although the original creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, were initially involved in the adaptation, they later departed from the project. In an open letter, DiMartino explained that “things did not go as we had hoped.” Instead, they established Avatar Studios at Paramount, working on a feature-length animated film set to hit theaters in 2025, expanding the iconic “Last Airbender” universe.
